Punch It Up with a Pergola

Want to give your deck or patio area a real boost? Consider a pergola.

Pergolas are an excellent addition to any home or garden area. Not only are they decorative, but they can also provide a good amount of shade and the perfect medium for climbing plants.

What’s more, pergolas are totally customizable for your unique outdoor living space. They can be built in any shape or size and, while most pergolas are made from pressure-treated lumber, they can also be constructed from vinyl, aluminum and Trex composite material.

An Ancient Concept

Did you know that pergolas have been around since ancient times? These lovely structures have actually served multiple purposes down through the ages. From supporting beautiful hanging gardens for the rich elite, to enabling access to harvestable vegetation for the common worker.

Ancient Egyptians used them to train grape vines and other climbing plants, as well as to provide much-needed relief from the hot desert sun.

During the Italian Renaissance, pergolas included large, dramatic pillars made of smooth stone.

In Victorian England, this look was softened, and most pergolas were made from wood to provide a more “naturalistic” appearance.

Which brings us to today…

The Modern Pergola

Today’s pergolas are still typically constructed of wood (primarily cedar or pine), although they can also be made from vinyl, aluminum or composite materials.

At its heart, the modern pergola is a relatively simple design. It mainly consists of sturdy boards and crossbeams. (These are often accented with latticework and climbing plants.)

However, innovations in technology (such as motorized roofs or canopies) have increased the functionality of pergolas. This, in turn, has contributed to the overall popularity of outdoor living spaces.

The various styles of pergolas run the gamut from traditional Roman, to Mediterranean, Asian, rustic, contemporary, and just about anything in between.

While space and budget are two possible constraints when designing a pergola, the general “rules” of pergola design are flexible.
